Kajagoogoo Hearts Ozzy

Music or Muzak?

This anecdote from Nick Beggs from Kajagoogoo (of "Too Shy" fame) details meeting his personal hero, Ozzy Osbourne. The Ozz's final line to Nick is one of the greatest rock and roll quotes I've ever heard in my life.

(To fully appreciate this quote, I guess you should be passively familiar with who Kajagoogoo were.)

And a poll.

"I was performing at a Rock/Pop festival in Europe in the 80's and staying at a hotel with all the other luminaries of the day. I recall seeing Ozzy Osbourne and Bruce Dickinson talking in the hotel bar that evening.

"Becoming overwhelmed by my fan-like mentality, I helplessly ran up to Ozzy and spouted, 'Oh my God -- Ozzy Osbourne! I can't believe it! You were my biggest influence!'

"To which he replied, 'Fuck off! I'm not taking the blame for that crap!"

Just clicked on that Kajagoogoo link and got reminded of the precious, almost tear-jerking, devotion of amateur webmasters to their favorite bands. I quote:

"Welcome to the Official Kajagoogoo & Limahl Fan Page USA. Back in 1982 Kajagoogoo released what has, arguably, become the most popular New Wave song, "Too Shy". Although their subsequent releases never gained the commercial notoriety of "Too Shy", Kajagoogoo continued to develop artistically and create music for themselves which appealed less to the commercial audience.
"Arguably"??? There was an argument about whether "Too Shy" was the most popular new wave song ever?? I wasn't in that argument! Were any of you in that argument over the most popular new wave song?? Tell me, who won -- was it "Too Shy"? How about "Shiny Shiny"? Maybe "Doctor Doctor"?

Man, this makes me wanna go down to the hotel bar and trade shots with Rob Halford.

Paul, I can't believe you're going to get me to put words into print about this subject, but I guess I owe you for making my hour in Chicago fly by so quickly. I voted Reagan, because of the stuff you listed he fits best. He was someone we could love to hate with a never ending array of bittersweet chuckles, unlike W who just makes me want to cry. Naked Eyes are definately my favorite of the new wave bands you listed for "Promises Promises". There is no argument, the most popular new wave song is that damn "Come On Eileen" and I've got the scars to prove it.

Oddly, I do things other places.

i had to vote for hayzee fantayzee just because i thought i was the only person scarred by the horror of their music. "shiny shiny" is so wrong. and so right.

"that's right. one key, several gates, multiple apocalypses."
