Of course, we SOS users are all bred with the gift of discernment and media savvy, so we know the truth: Ernie and Bert are television's longest-running gay role models.
However, Sesame Street's perpetually entwined male Muppets are vigorously countering that all-but-verified urban legend that they are, in fact, a happy homosexual couple.
ABC reports that Sesame Street producers are threatening to sue the creators of an indie short film, Ernest and Bertram, which depicts the beloved children's characters as gay male lovers, ending with a distraught Ernie shooting himself in the head.
Are Ernie and Bert straight? Yeah, sure, straight as Tom Cruise. But unbelievably, that's not all there is to the story.
Poll? You have to ask?

| This same article reveals how Sesame Street producers also threatened to sue the creator of a humor website, "Bert Is Evil," which claimed the more cranky Muppet is "the sinister force behind every dark moment of the 20th century."
Sadly, this website was forced off the 'net by the litigious clamheads of the Children's Television Workshop, but ABC has preserved the picture of Bert posing with Osama bin Laden for posterity as, by far, the funniest thing ever to appear on the ABC News website.
(This may or may not be a still-running mirror of the Bert is Evil website -- please be forewarned about the annoying number of porn pop-up windows you're likely to activate by clicking on it.)
Of course, this all reminds me of the flap involving Jerry Falwell and the "gay" Teletubbie back in 1999. I still say Ernie and Bert should relax and give themselves the opportunity to be the true role models they really are. Come out of the closet, you Muppets, the weather's fine! |
