SummerSlam 2002
August 25, 2002
Long Island, New YorkOpening Match
Kurt Angle vs. Rey Misterio, Jr.
Kurt Angle and Rey Misterio, Jr. had what is being called an Awesome Opener. Seeing those two together is like watching David vs. Goliath, the size difference is so blatant.
A lot of flying around by Rey, but Angle eventually caught him in the anklelock, dragging him all around the ring until Rey tapped.
There had been speculation amongst us armchair bookers that this would be a horrible clash in styles, but we were wrong.
** Bischoff and Stephanie have to share an office, and they watch the show together**
Singles Match
Chris Jericho vs. Ric Flair
Jericho tried to embarrass Flair by putting him in his own Figure-Four Leglock, but Flair reached the ropes before tapping. He showed Jericho how to do it right, and Chris tapped.
Singles Match
Eddie Guerrero vs. Edge
Eddie spends a lot of the match beating on Edge's shoulder (it had been injured a few months ago), going so far as to even hit the Frog Splash on it.
All that beating was for nothing, as Edge got the spear and the pin.
WWE Tag-Team Championship
The UnAmericans (c) vs. Booker T & Goldust
Long Island was really into this match, as those New Yorkers hate Canadians, you know.
As Storm and Christian were being beaten senseless, Test ran in, planted his foot into Booker's face, and Christian covers for the pin.
**Meanwhile, at The World in Times Square (WWE's restaurant and nightclub), Jamie Noble is hosting a "Make Out With Nidia" contest. While Nidia tongues some guy on a leather couch, Bischoff and Steph have opposing views: Bischoff likes Nidia for knowing what a woman's place is, while Steph retorts that a woman's place is ON TOP...as much as I dislike Steph, she can be on top of me anytime she wants.**
WWE Intercontinental Championship
Chris Benoit (c) vs. RVD
Chris controlled the whole match, but RVD did his 5-Star Frog Splash out of nowhere for the win.
The time of the Fall: 16 Minutes and 31 Seconds, your winner, AND FOR THE THIRD TIME THE NEWWWW World Wrestling Entertainment Intercontinental Champion, ROB VAN DAM
Eric Bischoff has the Intercontinental Belt on Raw again. Stephanie Cackles as if she had something up her sleeve..however, Steph is a bad actress so who knows what she was trying to get across.
Singles Match
Test vs. Undertaker
Undertaker actually sells for Test, who beats Holy Hell out of him. But then Storm and Christian show up as well, and all of a sudden Undertaker is able to clean up the ring with all of them. He pulls out the Tombstone Piledriver for this one and gets the pin.
Piledriver: A move where you hold your opponent upside-down and drop him on top of his head. If he is facing you while upside-down, it is an Inverted, or Tombstone, piledriver..named so when the Undertaker first used it.
For awhile, everyone and their dog was doing Drivers (any move where you drop a guy on his head)..but after numerous injuries they've been told to stop. Also, with everyone doing piledrivers, and people kicking out of them, the move just didn't seem effective anymore.
The writers have tried to re-condition the fans into believing that it's a dangerous and devastating move.
Non-Sanctioned Match
HHH vs. HBK
Shawn's back injury which ended his career is well documented..and Hunter just totally decimated that back throughout the beginning..even slamming chairs into it.
Shawn was able to come back, among other things jumping on Triple H through a table, and diving off a ladder onto him.
Both men bled all over the place...Shawn was able to get a surprise roll-up for the pin.
Afterwards, HHH slammed a sledgehammer twice into Shawn's back. HBK was stretchered out.
**Lillian Garcia kicked Howard Finkle in the nuts**
WWE Undisputed Heavyweight Championship
Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock (c)
Long Island was totally BOOING The Rock and cheering for Brock.
Brock did two F5s on Rock and got the pin.
The time of the Fall: 16 Minutes and 1 Second, your winner, AND NEWWW World Wrestling Entertainment Undisputed Heavyweight Champion, BROCK LESNAR!!!
Backstage Notes
1. People were amazed that Shawn Michaels didn't hold back in his match, most assumed he was going to be cautious. Shawn didn't show any ill effects backstage.
2. Rock said it didn't bother him that he was being booed, the fans were into what they were doing and that's what counts. He will be filming a movie into 2003 and doesn't expect to be back before then.
All future movies with The Rock will list him under his real name: Dwayne Johnson.
