Carter was a diabetic. Sources only say that Carter collapsed at her home and died of natural causes.
Carter's list of credits include the above-mentioned feel-good TV shows, the movies Hair (goddamn hippies), Modern Problems and The Crazysitter. She also, interestingly, performed in the 1985 Circus of the Stars.
Carter's greatest all-time moment, however, was as part of a five-person Broadway revue entitled Ain't Misbehavin'. This 1977 show, which featured the songs of Fats Waller, is perhaps Broadway's all-time best revue of a specific artist's work. Carter became a star thanks to Ain't Misbehavin' and won a Tony for her efforts. The original cast album for Ain't Misbheavin' is one of the few Broadway musical recordings that is completely cringe-free; it's a stellar, fun and entertaining work. Carter is one of the very few contemporary entertainers whose biggest break on the road to stardom was a Broadway show in which no line-reading was required.
