Warmest greetings possible in this incredibly screwed up week.
Fat Possum Records has informed us that bluesman R.L. Burnside, a positively bad muthafucka who enjoyed a career resurgence amongst alt-types in the 1990s, has died at age 78. Obit later.
In what I'm hoping is a news story that gets resolved happily, New Orleans rock and soul legends Fats Domino and Irma Thomas are unaccounted for in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Domino remained in New Orleans past the evacuation order with his family; no word has been heard from him since Monday.
Update [2005-9-1 18:56:52 by mort]: Fats Domino has been found. CNN knows all. or nothing.
Update [2005-9-4 0:26:51 by Paul Shrug]: Alex Chilton is alive, and in Houston. See inside text for our worrywarting.

| Alex Chilton, a bonafide rock music legend who was in the Box Tops and Big Star, also lived in New Orleans, and also has not yet been accounted for.
According to family members and associates, Chilton decided to weather the storm himself. Speculation is that his house wasn't damaged by the winds, but was flooded after the levee break.
"Official word" will be posted on Chilton's Yahoo! Group Page when the singer is accounted for, hopefully alive.
Update [2005-9-4 23:47:41 by Paul Shrug]: I've decided to stop worrying about Alex Chilton. According to posts on the Yahoo Group, it is pretty much -- sort of -- confirmed that Chilton was seen alive on Wednesday.
I would get more into this, but -- I swear this is true -- it's getting down to what's being said amongst a bunch of bartenders at this bar in New Orleans, and whether the one who actually saw Alex on Wednesday was the one who officially gave the confirmation first-hand. It's just like how we identify newborn fathers at McCoy's! |
